Hydrant Flushing/waterline Maintenance

Flushing water lines through the use of fire hydrants is required by the Health Department and is an important preventive maintenance activity. Although it may appear to waste water, the process is necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system.

Residents in the immediate vicinity of the work may experience temporary discoloration of their water. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt due to minerals and air which does not affect the safety of the water. Although there is no health hazard associated with the discolored water, it is recommended that customers refrain from using water during flushing.

When flushing activities are finished, clear pipes by running an outside hose bib for a few minutes. Check faucets and screens for trapped debris and wait until the water clears before using it for potable purposes or washing garments. When flushing schedules can be determined in advance they will be posted on our home page.
